Stars in Our Sky #8
Mary Wunderlich, painting.
During our family trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico in January, we came across a dreamy art shop in the city’s downtown called Mew & Company, where Zanny purchased a painting that now hangs above her writing desk. This month, we’re delighted to feature the work of Mary Wunderlich, the founder of Mew & Company.
Here is Mary’s background in her own words:
I grew up in the woods tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia. My love affair with art and creating began at a very young age and is still going strong. Life led me and my husband to Maryland, Texas, Oklahoma, and finally New Mexico where I opened a little boutique, Mew & Company. The store serves as a gallery for my own work and a place for me to share all the gorgeous work of other artisans from around the world. Since moving to the New Mexican desert a few years ago, I’ve been fascinated with its bold and raw colors. It is no wonder it is named the “Land of Enchantment.”

ZAN AND PA: Mary, what inspires you?
MARY: Nature and people are my inspiration. The beauty of nature is inexhaustible. To capture its many moods, textures, and vibrant colors in watercolor is an ongoing challenge. I want to help others see the vast beauty of the landscape that surrounds them. To inspire someone with my work to get out in nature and explore or take a second look is deeply fulfilling and motivating to keep creating.

Mary,
Lovely work, in so many ways. I especially admire the soft color you bring to the Southwest. In my excursions there, New Mexico especially, the landscape tended to be shades of white, which while also radiant, never seemed to capture and express the richness of the Southwest. Thank you for your vision.
