Stars in Our Sky #4
Ann Trusty, painting
Our star for this month is a one half of a very talented couple in our circle of friends (we’ll feature the other half next month) a third-generation artist whose oil and watercolor paintings celebrate the mysteries of Nature. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, France and Turkey in both museum and gallery exhibitions, and has received favorable reviews by the New York Times. With John Hulsey, she co-founded and publishes the educational website, The Artist's Road.
She has exhibited her work in one and two-person exhibitions at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Fine Art, St. Joseph, MO; the Louise Jones Brown Gallery at Duke University; the Westchester Gallery at the State University of NY, White Plains; the Hemisphere Club, Rockefeller Center, NY; and the Alice and Hamilton Fish Library Gallery, Garrison, NY.
Her painting and contemporary quilt work have been included in juried and group exhibitions of the American Women Artists; the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, NY; the Museum of San Diego History; the Islamic Arts Museum, Istanbul, Turkey; the Turkish American Society, Ankara, Turkey; the Union des Maisons des Métiers d'Art Français, Paris; the Musée de l'Impression sur Étoffes, Mulhouse; the Musée-Chateau d'Anneçy, Anneçy; the Musée des Beaux Arts, Angers; the Galérie des Tanneurs, Tours. She is a Signature Member of the American Women Artists.
Trusty's art has received the American Artist Professional League Award; Merit Awards from Richeson 75; the Merit Award from the American Craft Awards, NY; and has been featured in many publications, including Gakken Art Books, Tokyo; Lark Books; International Artist Magazine; and Artists Magazine.
ZAN AND PA: Ann, what inspires you?
ANN: I am so very fortunate to be an artist, to be born with a heightened sensitivity to all the beauty and, alas, all the ugliness in this world. It can be both a blessing and a curse, but ultimately I believe it is a gift and I hope to honor it as best I can.
What inspires me in my work and what I hope I am able to do a bit of justice to in my paintings comes from Nature herself. She provides glimpses, delights of such overpowering beauty—colors, flowers, butterflies, birds—all seem to be emissaries reminding us of the greater beauty that perhaps we aren’t equipped to see in all its magnificence and/or all at once? Are they reminders to keep us balanced as we work through this mysterious life? I am inspired by the unimaginable diversity, the myriad light effects on petals and wings—translucence and reflectivity, and, color, color, color!
I strive to capture the essence of their beauty and mystery and to translate it into the language of art as a small reminder of their charms. Whether I succeed or not is up to the viewer, but the process of attempting is a much-needed meditation for the artist!
